Serenity Cubed report - Friday
The Opening Ceremony,
or How Hot Is Gigi Edgley Exactly?
or How Silly Can Our Big Damn Heroes Get?
Sean Harry started off the opening ceremony by announcing the dates for Serenity 4, as well as the first booked guests: Jonathan Woodward and Ron fucking Glass! The world hates me. Or possibly just Jonny hates me, I'm not sure, but the point is: I will never get to see him. Ever.I'm only going to S4 if Alan is announced. And that's that.
Then! Gigi Edgley came on and oh my god. Crush on Chiana? Check. Crush on Gigi? Oh so check. She was in this gorgeous oh so tight dress that showed off so much LEGS and she is gorgeous, funny, outgoing, a real firestarter. I adore her. She almost pole-danced for us. I swear.
The first surprise guest we got was Nectar Rose, and I have to say I went "huh?" And then was told she was the lovebot and I have to say I was vaguely disappointed. (That changed later.)
The second guest, however, got a wonderful ovation that really took him by surprise. It was Michael Fairman, aka Niska. He was both creepy and absolutely wonderful at the same time. Creepy because of Niska, and that impression lasted through the opening ceremony, but then he gave off this amazing vibe of... I can't really describe it. He's very charismatic and funny and you just want to listen to him. A lot.
Then Gigi announced Mark Sheppard, aka Badger, who we knew about, and he got as big of a cheer as always because everybody adores him and with good reason. He's lovely.
Then Gigi announced the third surprise guest, who was none other than Christina "Yo-Saf-Bridge" Hendricks... and Sean strutted onstage as if he were her. You can imagine everybody cheered like crazy, and then he walked off to let Christina on. She started talking to us, like they all do, when Morena walked onstage and grabbed the mike, going "that's enough of that," and meaning to take the stage away from Christina. That had Jewel walking onstage and taking the mike from Morena and imitating her, "I'm so happy to be here even though I'm, like, so tired..." (It was all in the tone.) And Morena gave Jewel rabbit ears as she talked, and Sean walked behind them to give rabbit ears to Morena. And they got all apologetic to Gigi, 'sorry we completely ruined your thing'-like.
When Gigi did get around to introducing Sean, she said she met him two days before when they slept together on the plane. Ha! Sean, ever the gentleman, neither denied nor confirmed. Read what you want into this.
So that was it for the opening ceremony. Did I mention we were on the first row? So very close. Perfect.
The Meet and Greet
or How Amazingly Nice Are They All?
We were all sitting at tables, and the guests went around and spent some time at each one. At our table were the usual suspects (Rosie and her mother, Elisa, Delphine, Fred and us) plus a guy from Yorkshire that brought his daughter and a friend of hers for his daughter's birthday.
The first guest we had over was Michael Fairman, who was just as nice up close as the vibe I'd got from him at the opening ceremony (not the creepy one, the other one). He was extremely friendly and told us he really wasn't prepared for the welcome he got at the opening ceremony, especially seeing as he was just a bad guy, and that the energy in the room was really impressive, etc.
He told us how he almost cancelled because his daughter (Sky, 12), didn't want him to fly over. He called Sean Harry and argued something had come up, except when he told his daughter she went "no, you should go, you want to," and he called Sean back and said he could come after all. It was his first convention, too! I mentioned the discos, and how we expected to see him on the dance floor, to which he laughed and replied, "I'm an elderly man!" An adorable one, either way, and with more than enough energy.
Then Gigi Edgley and Nectar Rose came over. Gigi was by our side, so we didn't hear anything from Nectar. Gigi was extremely nice and fun, it's incredible. She's so friendly and just damn happy to be here and it shows. I did work up the courage to tell her she was just as beautiful without the make-up, and that that was saying something, and she proceeded to tell us about the make-up process and how awful it was to get her contacts set up proper. More about that in a panel, since she told that story again. She also asked about us and what we did, etc, and was overall very outgoing and great at making us feel like she cared. Yay! (Did I mention the crush?)
Next were Morena Baccarin and Christina Hendricks. Morena was the one sitting by our side, and she almost immediately asked Joey about her SLR camera, which was sitting on the table. Her boyfriend, David, is into photography, so she doesn't know much about it but she's very interested. Joey explained how she was sad that she couldn't really do good upclose portraits with it because the stage was too far away, and Morena said that if they saw each other at a party she could sneak a pic from her (since you're really not supposed to). And if needed, we'd tell Sean Harry that Morena insisted. And that she was drunk!
We also talked about Christina's boyfriend, Glenn Howerton aka the Kid Mal Shot To 'Save' Him From The Reavers (who was here on Saturday night), who had almost turned down the part in Serenity, until Morena convinced him otherwise. (He thought it was too small a part.) Apparently, Morena set him and Christina up. He also happens to be a friend of David Krumholtz.
Then Jewel Staite came over, all smiles and sweetness. There was a loud pop, from a bottle, and she looked up and went, "must be Gigi. I hear a pop, must be Gigi." Clearly Gigi had no trouble fitting in with them, because that is a telltale sign of acceptance and belonging among the Firefly guys, when they lovingly take the piss out of each other. She said of Sean that he was always the one that was the drunkest, and that he was cuter when he was drunk.
She told us she'd gone shopping in London with her agent, and they're both addicted to shopping. Somebody went "did you buy shoes?" and she went, "why does everybody say that? I have some self control." And then explained how she bought two pairs of shoes and then forced herself to stop and then only bought a jacket and some pants and a pashmina and and and. It was a pretty impressive list.
Rosie asked her about Vancouver, since she's heading over to Canada on Wednesday, for a year (travel safe, honey! you'll be missed!), and Jewel gave her advice on where to stay and then went on to ramble about how Canada is the best city in the whole wide world. In her own words, "Vancouver is the shit."
Then we had the lovely and adorable Mark Sheppard with us. He told us his family was there, that his boys had flown for the first time with his wife. They're one and seven, called William and Maximilian. And also adorable but I'll get back to that later. Joey and I accidentally (no, I swear) hit on his PA, who was pretty attractive actually, and just great, and Mark went "oh, I'll hold the camera!" and all four of us joked about that for a while.
The very striking thing about Mark was how much he wanted everybody at the table involved in the conversation. Most of the other guests tended to get into discussions with a handful of us, and stay focused on that, whereas he was always intent on getting everybody involved, which was very neat.
When Fred told him he was from Paris, Mark wanted to know where exactly. It turns out that he stayed in Paris for a while in the 80s, because the band he was in back then, the Barracudas, was pretty successful there. He went, "give me a number!", expecting an arrondissement number, except Fred lives in the suburbs. So we gave him ours. Anyway!
He also told us how he played in Alger once, during the veeeeery short period when they had a socialist goverment. He said it was incredibly creepy. They were greeted by the chief of police, who later provided them with drugs and hookers, and he also spent three days by the desert with a Tuareg. I'd love to talk to him some more, he's a fascinating man.
And last but not least, we had Sean Maher heading over. Joey had her Seandar on and always knew where he was sitting in the roomand how many pints of beer he'd had, which was an interesting number thereof, it was something. Anyway, he did get around to us, and oh boy did he like Joey or what. He was sitting right next to her and he was extremely friendly and relaxed and smiling so much, ah, what a cutie.
The big news? Is that he's intent on learning French. He was in a class with a few other people but he just decided to switch to private tutoring, with somebody from the South of France teaching him. He said he didn't like Paris, but that he liked the South. Which is fair enough. He also said he loved everything about the French language and culture. And he talks some Spanish.
We also told him that Nathan spoke some pretty good French, which he didn't know, and he said he'd call him but he'd wake him up. And he could go, "Bonjour, Nathan!" and it was the cutest thing ever. Heee. Ahem.
He adores Vancouver. Incredibly so. He shot a pilot up there, and if it got picked up he would've had to live there, so he looked through the city as a place where he might live, really got to know it, and he loves it. When he had to leave, Joey mentioned she wanted to know about his drama experience, since we know so little about that, and he was all "yeah!" saying how those are projects he spent "blood and tears" on and nobody knew about them.
Also, he liked Joey so much, it was glaringly obvious. They just really connected. And I have no clue what Sean's sexuality is, but he definitely made my gaydar (or possibly bidar?) beep. There was a vibe. In the way he moved, talked, walked, spoke, kept touching himself. An example, picture the scene: Joey and he are talking. Or more accurately, he's attentively listening to her. And at the same time he runs his finger on his lips, round and round. It was so hard to stop staring. Anyway. There is definitely something gay about him. ...not to mention that we latter learned that he used to have 4 ear piercings, one on his eyebrow, one on his tongue, and one on his belly button. That said, again, I'm not going to make any assumptions. I simply wouldn't be surprised.
After that, Elisa and I hurried off to the dance floor, while Joey hung back and talked with some PAs. Not the best of the discos, although fun was had anyway. Ta-daa! That was it for the Friday.
