Kourtrajmé

I don't know if anybody actually cares about Sheitan, but just in case. First off, you should. Care about it. At least give it a try! The more I think about it, the happier I am that I've seen it. I think it's the energy of the movie that I enjoyed the most. But, anyway. Points!

First point. My brother made me discover Kourtrajmé, a clique of directors, actors, musicians and techies... and the team behind Sheitan. If you go on the website, and into films, you can watch clips from their shorts (kourtrajmé is slang for short movies), in some of which you can find Vincent Cassel or Matthieu Kassovitz. I personally recommand "Wanted Brothers 2: La Barbichette". ...of course, if you're not French, it's gonna be hard to enjoy.

Second point. Back to the subject of Sheitan. The movie blog is pretty interesting, with a note from the director and, also, Cassel explaining why he produced the movie. Here's a translation for those that may be interested but aren't French (translation done very quickly, the meaning is there, the exact tone not necessarily).

"Why I produced this movie" by Vincent Cassel

One day, this tall eighten-year-old guy shows up with a DV camera in hand and babbles at me "go on say something for KOURTRAJME!..." "Kour... what??" I willingly comply, given the chipper tone of the guy, I say stuff I can't really remember, but I comply.

A few months later I receive a cd-rom on which is written KOURTRAJME, I put it in my Mac to discover a series of wacky images without any real apparent meaning, but into which is edited the result of our first meeting.

What I see straight away, on top of a certain poetry, is an intriguing form, and a powerful sense of rhythm. As soon as the occasion arises, I try to get this nice young director to work on a rap video... which ends up not working out.

"Doesn't matter," the young KIM CHAPIRON (a.k.a. the viet from KOURTRAJME) tells me, "if you want we can shoot a short."

"When," is my answer. "I'm a pretty busy professional actor and I'm in the middle of shooting Read My Lips."

"Sunday if you want!"

"Sure, but only from 2:30 to 6."

"No problem!"

And there I am, shooting a short with this team with who I have to let go of everything I expect from cinema since with them, you don't even get a "shot/reverse-shot". And as it happens I thought I'd shot one short whereas in all this mess I'd actually shot three. The already cult trilogy of the Brothers Wanted was born.

All the Parisian producers with whom I've worked will tell you. I tried to get them all to hire one or two directors from Kourtrajmé (Romain Gavras, Toumani Sangare), claiming they were the direct children of LA HAINE and DOBERMANN. But no can do, they're too young, too crazy, that's not cinema, too much of this or not enough of that. One of them, though, reacts straight off, the producer of Dobermann: Eric Nece from la Chauve Souris, who tells me "If one day you wanna produce them I'll be right there with you..."

Very shortly after that Kim Chapiron told me he had an idea for a funny, sexy movie with a bad atmosphere. I didn't need any more than that, I decided to produce this movie through my company 120 FILMS, in association with la Chauve Souris...
