"C'est fou comme c'était la lose dans ma vie avant qu'j'te kiffe."

For anybody who is French, or understands it (and slang) well enough, I love these commercials. I love the play on language and I think they're awesome. Way to go.

Who's on Twitter? I just signed up and I want friends. (I blame James Gunn for making me sign up. I wanna follow his stuff. James Gunn equals lots of little hearts I don't know the code for.)

I wonder whether I might not try to do Nano again this year.

I don't know, I'm sort of bothered by the implication that teen speech is "worse" than the written language they use (which is fairly basic). The idea's pretty cute though.

[identity profile] fan-elune.livejournal.com 2008-09-02 01:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, the "gros kiss avec la langue" is not so much teen speak being bad as the guy being kinda gross on this one. You know me, I'm the first one to speak up for slang and language evolution, but I do believe there's such a thing as reading things too much in a political light. The fact is that verlan and slang in general is not the language associated with love letters, and that's that. It's funny and it's sweet and it's cute.

Besides, it shows that you can get exactly the same message across, whether you use "regular", bordering on literary French, or slang. In my view, it validates slang that way. Because that's the way those kids think, in slang, and their sentiments are no less true. It makes slang more accessible to people with preconceptions against verlan-speaking teenagers. It makes those teenagers touching.

Okay, now I'm reading way too much into this. ;)))

It's really just the final slogan and its use of "better" that bothers me - the rest of it is pretty cute, I'll give you that.

[identity profile] fan-elune.livejournal.com 2008-09-02 02:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I... didn't even pay attention to the slogan. JF is way too cute. I blame him entirely. They remind me of some of my teen regulars. To think that we used to be like that! Hee.

[identity profile] greenie-breizh.livejournal.com 2008-09-02 02:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Ha. Considering I posted my other comment before reading this one, I think I really hit it in the nose - you're even using your Skins icon. :) I was never a teen like that.

[identity profile] fan-elune.livejournal.com 2008-09-02 02:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Heh! I know, right? The Skins bit made me smile especially. I was just looking for an appropriate icon and there it was! And then there was your comment. Here, have a Maxxie.

[identity profile] greenie-breizh.livejournal.com 2008-09-02 02:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I was just reflecting on why the commercial doesn't really get to me on an emotional level and I think it's kind of like Skins (which I still have mixed feelings about despite the fact it's undoubtedly an amazing show). I really have trouble relating to kids who remind me too much of the kids who made me miserable back in jr. high... I suspect early teenage romances and use of slang are two things that can put me off.

Hm. I really need to get my hands on Entre les murs.

And to get to school. *facepalm*

[identity profile] fan-elune.livejournal.com 2008-09-02 02:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that makes sense, whereas I have a very nostalgic vibe for those days.

So do I, if only to see what the fuss is all about. If there is a reason to fuss at all.

Yeah, I should get back to my X-Files.

My French is so not good enough. But I am on Twitter - as itinerant_vae.

And the code you want is ♥ I believe?

[identity profile] fan-elune.livejournal.com 2008-09-02 01:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Well then, lots of ♥ to you. :D

Because my French is below rudimentary? *g* I love how some of those hearts have bunched up together like they're getting cosy.

♥♥♥

[identity profile] fan-elune.livejournal.com 2008-09-02 02:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, mostly for giving me the code, but that too, sure! You get hearts for everything.

...that would just be me forgetting to type spaces in. I was copying and pasting away. Woopsie?

Nah, let's just pretend it's them getting cosy together.

[identity profile] littlegothsin.livejournal.com 2008-09-02 03:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Hee, it's cute.
I'm pioup on twitter, but I haven't used it yet

*goes and checks, slaps forehead*

That's because I actually used yoritomo_reiko there. I guess alashandra must have already been taken.
