Lost vignette: Signs

Here's a short vignette with Charlie and Claire as the main characters (and a tiny bit of Sawyer). They don't belong to me, yaddi yaddi yadda. No real spoilers, it's located in early S1.

Charlie looked at her clear blue eyes and the way she held her hands over her round belly, and he had a hard time keeping from smiling. She always had that effect on him and if he did not pay attention to it he was sure he would be grinning all the time around her. After his guitar she was the best help through rehab he could possibly have and she did not even know it, but that really didn't mean he was going to pretend about that lot of codswallop, no matter how into it she was. "I don't believe in it."

"You just need to be convinced," Claire contradicted him with a smile in her delightful Aussie accent.

"All right," he conceded as he crossed his arms over his chest and looked at her shrewdly. "Convince me."

"I'd say you're a Pisces."

He frowned. "I am."

"'Course you are. Creative and caring, makes sense. I also got Kate's sign down right, you can ask the Gemini-ness of her."

"Wait a minute, I want more proof. That could just be a fluke." He let his gaze roam over the loiterers on the beach and it fell on a particular brawny figure surprisingly reading a book; Charlie wouldn't have bet two quid that he could actually read. "What's Sawyer's sign?"

"Hmm. He's tough. Sagittarius, maybe?"

Charlie held up a finger as he scrambled to his feet. "Just a second."

Sawyer looked up from his book at the musician when Charlie's shadow fell on him. "Whaddaya want?"

"When were you born?"

"What do you care?"

"It's a thing. With Claire."

"Is it?" Sawyer asked with nothing remotely close to interest as he looked back down into the book.

But Charlie had had all the necessary training at being an annoying pain in the arse, and then some. That was what having a brother did for you. He inclined the book in Sawyer's hands to get a look at the cover. "What are you readin'?"

He did not have the time to see more than the image of a rabbit that Sawyer had snatched the book away. "July 29. You gonna leave me alone now?"

Charlie smiled victoriously as he headed back to Claire. "July isn't Sagittarius, is it?"

She frowned. "He's Cancer?"

"July 29, ma'am."

"Leo," she said pensively.

"Point is I won." Charlie plopped himself down in front of her. "We shoulda bet something."

"It's not like it's that simple." She scrunched up her nose in the cutest of ways, as she did when she was a bit put out. "You've got ascendants and the likes to take into account."

"Excuses, excuses. Cow dung, I say. With all due respect," he hastily added as she raised her eyebrows at him.

"I'll do your chart some day, we'll see if it's cow dung when I've got you all figured out, Charlie-boy."

"I'll be waiting to see that."

Seconds ticked away in comfortable silence. The sand was hot under Charlie's fingers and he almost did not think of his drugs at the feel of the grains sliding through his fingers as he dug them in deeper. He tried to decide whether Claire's sunhat was making her any cuter, and whether the head ornament held any cuteness to start with or if it was some of her own rubbing off on it.

"What are you smiling at?"

Her blue eyes were sparkling and he did not feel like curbing his grinning tendencies just then. No, he felt like being genuine. "Nothing."

She laughed, and he joined in with a chuckle.

ETA: Terribly sorry I forgot to put it behind an lj-cut! I hate myself for that. (Well, not, but I feel bad about it.)

Cute! I haven't ever seen the show but this was cute :)

One tiny mistake: quid, even plural, is still quid (not quids). Otherwise, v. nice :)

Wicked! Cute is exactly what I was aiming at. :)

Thanks for that, I actually knew it, stupid me. Thanks! Mistake corrected.
