Just watched Secretary. It was quite good. Very original, you hardly ever see anything like that. Maggie Gyllenhall was excellent, she's a great actress. James Spader quite fascinated me - and, as often with me, mostly thanks to his voice. A voice to send shivers down your spine. (Checked his imdb profile and, whoa, he was Daniel in the original Stargate movie? I'd never have placed him.) And, indeed, some scenes were quite, quite hot. The way they were shot...
I knew I'd seen Jeremy Davies somewhere before, and it's in Dogville. That was a hard, excellent movie. I've only seen two Lars von Triers, that and Dancer in the Dark. Dancer shook me, it's as simple as that. I was sobbing by the end. Dogville was more of a fable. It left you disgusted with the human being, but it didn't strike as close to home. I think I have more than a bit of the masochist in me as well, because I love such movies. Movies that hurt you. Something they said in Secretary and that I find true for myself, to an extent: to fully embrace life, you've got to know pain as well. And well, personally, I'd rather choose the easy way out of knowing pain through such movies, get a good cry out that way, than having real cause for pain and tears rooted in my real life. Those happen from time to time, of course, but I count myself as fortunate and I can just hope that'll last.
And all I meant to say was that I'd enjoyed Secretary. Go, Ranting!Me, go!
