I think we saw the same things in Serenity. And the more I watch it, the more I love this movie. There are so many details!
Re : the exposition scene : I heard peeps commenting on it "I don't get it, it's bad". Geez, guys, let the film roll (and rock you) and everything will be sorted out. Kind of :-)
