Movie meme gakked from [livejournal.com profile] the_grynne:

1. One movie that made you laugh: Most recently, it'll have to have been Wall-E. Right before that, Wanted.

2. One movie that made you cry: there have been very few times when I managed to watch Dead Poets' Society without crying. Yes, I've watched this movie an undecent amount of times. It owns a little piece of my soul.

3. One movie you loved when you were a child: Hook. I still know it by heart (the French version). "Toi tu as vraiment vraiment besoin d'une maman." "J'vais t'dire c'que c'est qu'une paramécie bicolore, m'sieur." "Hé, Rufio, va donc casser les noisettes de l'écureuil d'à côté." Etc.

4. One movie you've seen more than once: At the cinema? Casino Royale.

5. One movie you loved, but were embarrassed to admit it: I should be embarrassed for enjoying Waterworld as much as I did, shouldn't I, but I can't quite pull it off. I'm a tiny bit ashamed of liking Wanted, though, because it's so... yeah. But it was fun! And there was Jamie and Thomas! Also the High School Musicals. What? They're ridiculous and fun and I blame this on Joey.

6. One movie you didn't like: Before the Devil knows you're dead. I was really looking forward to it, but wound up being utterly bored. Also Capote. I guess PSH movies tend to disappoint me.

7. One movie that scared you: The Ring. The Japanese version, I haven't seen the American adaptation.

8. One movie that bored you: Apart from the above mentioned PSH movies? The Incredible Hulk. It bored me to tears.

9. One movie that made you happy: Wimbledon. I walked out of the theatre wanting to dance. It's been too long since I've watched it, I really should watch it again.

10. One movie that made you miserable: La Vita è bella. And the Pianist. And I love them to heartwrenching bits. They're movies that make you miserable and yet. Also every Ken Loach movie I've ever seen apart from Ae Fond Kiss, which is not miserable-making.

11. One movie you weren't brave enough to see: Borat. I started it, but couldn't finish. I just don't have that sort of courage. How utterly not funny.

12. One movie character you’ve fallen in love with: Chaucer, from A Knight's Tale. Rupert Everett's Marlowe, for all that he had one tiny scene and is hopelessly gay. Charlie Prince out of 3:10 to Yuma. I could keep listing them.

13. The last movie you saw: At the theatre, The Dark Knight.

14. The next movie you hope to see: I wish I could say Watchmen, but it's a long way until March. I wish I could say The Vintner's Luck, but still no news on a release date apart from "2009". Which is also a long way away. So it's going to be a filmed production of King Lear with Barry Lynch as Edmund. There shall be much, much squeeing. (Thanks again, Vae!) At the theatre? Babylon A.D. Mathieu Kassovitz and Vin Diesel doing sci-fi, I've gotta give it a try.

Oh gods Dead Poets Society I LOVE that film.

...why do I not have it on DVD?

Why do you not have it on DVD? Dude! It's so very wonderful and heartbreaking and I said wonderful already, right?

Now why do I no longer have any DPS icons. Hmpf. Oh well. I'll settle with replying to yours with its sister.

You did say wonderful already. Twice now. It's possibly the only film I can watch Robin Williams in, too. Hmm. *hits up ebay*

See, that's the icon that makes this one suddenly a lot less innocent...

Well it's wonderful at least twice over. So. There. And well, that and Hook. Hook totally is my big childhood film and why do I not have that on dvd? Hmpf.

Well, I love knowing how not innocent it is anyway. :D That picture is so amazing. How I adore it, let me count the ways.

I know! It was utterly heart-lifting. I don't often dig romcoms, but this one, it owns me. And it made me care about tennis for the first time in my life! A lot of this is due to Paul, of course. A LOT a lot.

Oh, High School Musical.

I still need to see the Dark Knight (which hopefully won't disappoint like Iron Man did) and to own all of Ken Loach's movie. Seriously. I wish I could buy stuff with constantly thinking 'how the hell am I going to bring this back?'

From: [identity profile] fan-elune.livejournal.com
Oh, High School Musical indeed. You're to blame for this entirely. Also the fact that I ship whatshisface and whatshisname. The gay kid and Zac's best mate. I've totally forgotten everybody's name. Also, the fact that I'm looking forward to the third film.

Iron Man disappointed you? Did I know that already? I forget what everybody tells me about these movies, I talk about them so much. Iron Man rocks. All thanks to RDJ. The Dark Knight I actually want to rewrite the script for. It's still good, but I think the script is way unbalanced. Structure could be better, and it shows. There's a big climax that should either have come much earlier, or at the very end of the movie. It would've changed a lot and made for a much better film, imho. Aaaanyway. Ken Loach = love and hearts. Hearts broken in two.

Dude. We have to see High School Musical 3 together. It just can't be any other way. And I have also forgotten everyone's name and I actually even forgot Zac had a best friend, is that the black kid? I read somewhere that they made the gay kid actually, more implicitly gay in the musical they put up of that movie, which, DUH. And Zac and his Simon face! Heee.

Iron Man post here. (Yeah, I can't be bothered to go into it again here.) Am still very curious to see the Dark Knight, I really hope they play it at school or at the cheap theater soon!! And Ken Loach is broken hearts and that's totally why I need to own it. Gloomy and realistic and touching and depressing and it's all social issues? Seriously. I have no excuse.

Date: 2008-08-25 03:40 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] fan-elune.livejournal.com
Yeah, the black kid. You know, they have that song together where Gay!Kid wants Black!Kid to dance. *cough*sohasacrush*cough* It's gonna be tough watching it together, though, seeing as you're on the other side of the Atlantic.

Your criticism of Iron Man makes total sense. I still enjoyed it, but I totally see your point, and part of me actually agrees. The other, fangirl part of me is just squeeing at Tony and Rhodey. (Who is also helplessly enamoured of Tony, in my world. Or not so helplessly.) TDK is not much better as far as woman representation is concerned, though.

You think? Really? TDK frustrated the hell out of me for the representations of women. But I won't go into detail if Joey's not seen it.

Is there any superhero movie out here that's not fucking frustrating as far as women go? I remember Spiderman being just as bad... Batman Begins didn't actually strike me as too bad in that respect but I might be obliterating the moment(s?) where the woman needs rescuing from the man as usual.

I'd need to rewatch X-men, they all struck me as blah regardless of the women, but at least they do have a bunch of women that kick ass for sure. :)

And ha, well. We shall not speculate but I'd sure hope so.

But the second X-Men was all about coming out and accepting your homosexuality! I'm serious. How could you find it blah?

I just realised, in the movies I think Mystique is the strongest female character we're shown. Dude. Because Storm sucks, Jean is troubled and Rogue is... well, Rogue. Mystique FTW!

I actually didn't have much frustration with Iron Man, but then I work in technology so I'm probably far too used to that attitude. I can't remember it being a thing for me in Batman Begins? I just want one superhero movie with one woman in it who isn't a damn victim.

Date: 2008-08-25 04:15 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] greenie-breizh.livejournal.com
I think the technology side of it is slowly pissing me off more and more than the woman side of things. I mean, even though these movie are blatantly conservative in their portrayal of women in some aspects, they do the same things we do in real life, sugar-coat it with other, more liberal aspects and the women are rarely explicitly put down because they're women. But the technology part, because it's something as a culture that we've come NOWHERE near being critical about, it's a love fest and that drives me batshit insane. More so because for it to be a technological lovefest there has to be total disregard for consequences in terms of energy use and ecological footprint and. Yeah. I have a huge problem with that. Again, more so because it's something that we should be questioning and we're not doing it. At best we're pretending we're doing it.

Fan' has a point with X-men, I think there might be women as non-victims in there. But generally I think the world of comics being adapted to the big screen definitely do not shine because of their feminist virtues. Not that we should be surprised at this point because it's pretty much the case with any blockbuster. Sigh.

Oh, cripes, don't even get me STARTED on the potential ecological impact of all these gadgets and goodies that the superheros (and James Bond) seem to need to equip themselves with. I could argue the uses of technology that I personally work with, from both ecological angles.

...I need to rewatch X-Men, since I don't remember the first clearly enough to judge that one. I do remember an implication that a woman couldn't handle equal power to a man...I haven't even watched X-3 yet at all, and don't remember 2 much.

X3 is not worth watching. In the slightest. No, seriously. It's just bad. It's crap. It's stupid. It's pointless. It's laughable. ...but Ian McKellen still rocks in it. What can I say. He's Sir Ian McKellen.

The 'interesting' thing, though, is how for all that they portray strong women in these movies, they're nowhere near as strong as in the comics. Storm is the perfect example of this. She is akin to a goddess in the comic books, all about woman power, and Pagan gods too; she is something else altogether. In the movies, she might kick ass but she's just a whiny, annoying goodie two shoe. Or is that just me? I can't stand the movie version of her.

The implication you're talking about must have something to do with Jean. I don't know what it might have been exactly, but if Jean has trouble dealing with her powers, it's also because they're actually much greater than Charles' or Magneto's. It's interesting, though, once more, the difference between the comic book and the movies: in the movies, she ends up snapping because of the power inside her. In the comics, Phoenix rises from an alien life force. So technically, she is weaker in the movies than in the comics. Although the shift is understandable because, well, aliens, who wants to bring aliens into an X-Men movie, it's still interesting.

I'm glad someone other than me noticed X-3 was crap. The only good thing about it was young!Magneto and Charles hangin' out. And by hanging out I mean doing it.

X-2 was awesome sauce though.

I don't think anybody failed to notice that X3 was crap. Did they? I don't think I've met a person who liked it. It is such utter and complete crap. But yes, Magneto and Charles were so totally doing it. It was obvious.

Yes it was! It was all about teh gay, after all. They just never came right out and said so. And Pyro was an actual three-dimensional character in that one! I love Pyro. I love that Pyro, anyway.

Yeah, precisely. I was really looking forward to Maggie Gyllenhaal's Rachel (and I know I've just misspelled her name, haven't I), but yeah, no. Even without going into the details in question, her character was just as blah as in the first movie. I want a Catwoman, damnit.

Date: 2008-08-25 04:07 pm (UTC)

I actually liked her character in the first movie in the sense that I have a soft spot for characters being active and trying to make the world a better place from the inside. :)

And a soft spot for Katie Holmes, yes. While I don't like her at all. You'll probably like her in this one, then; Maggie Gyllenhall makes a brilliant job of following in Katie Holmes' footsteps. And she still does that.

Black!kid is pretty cute! Of course Gay!kid would have a crush. :) And when does it come out? We could wait until Christmas. Or do you HAVE TO see the week it comes out?

Yeah, my problem is that my enjoyment of it was totally hindered by that stuff. It usually is now. :/ I don't expect Batman to be much better in terms of women, but maybe the other stuff will be less annoying? I don't know. In a way I don't even expect that. But I guess it depends on the underlying theme, so much of Iron Man is about technology and that REALLY bothers me, too (let's face it, the woman thing bothers me a lot, but I've seen it way too much for it to actually be a sole reason why I wouldn't enjoy a movie, I think). Batman Begins didn't bother me so much and I'm wondering if that's got to do with the themes that it touched on. I don't know, I'm just rambling and I should get dressed. But I will probably post about that once I see TDK. ^^

It's released here in October! That's not "the week it comes out", it's two months!! Two months, Joey. I'll have seen it by the time you come back, it's a fact.

Well, Batman does have an awful lot of gadgets as well. But you just know that Bruce Wayne is the kind of guy who'll totally give a more than decent budget to his green departments. Speaking of which, I'm watching Burn Up and thinking of you a lot. It's not exactly the best written television programme ever (far from it), but it's got Marc Warren, Neve Campbell, Rupert Penry-Jones and Bradley Whitford, dudette, and it's all about environmentalists and oil companies.

Oh, come on! It's High School Musical. Why do you need to see it so bad before Christmas?! It's not like everyone on your flist's going to be talking about it and writing fic!

How many episodes does Burn Up have?

Well, it's High School Musical. Why do you want me to wait so bad? I can always watch it again at Christmas. I don't think cracktasticness like this will have gotten old by then. :D Seeing Ryan (I think Gay!Kid is called Ryan, 'cause it made me love) on the poster alongside Zac (...Troy?) and Black!Best!Friend!Dude (who I consequently want to call Wallace) made me grin like an idiot. Maybe he'll be openly gay in this one? One can always dream. If they give him a girly love interest I will puke. Or, you know, just rant angrily. ...why am I so excited about this movie it's so sad.

Just the two, but they're 90 minutes each I do believe. Ish, anyway. It's really not that well written, especially for British telly, but it's worth watching all the same. Bradley Whitford = utter love. So is Marc Warren. The others are kind of blah. But pretty.

DUDE. DEAD POETS. DUDE.

Now I want to see that movie. Again. On repeat.

When he does Puck's lines...

Also, he was so totally gay for that other kid. At least half of that movie is me squeeing over gay tension. The other half is tears.

KAGE YOU DID NOT LIE YOU ARE BACK. Except I kind of want to type THOU ART BACK 'cause I'm in the middle of watching Lear and the Shakespeare is contagious.

I have missed you dearly, my true friend. Wouldst that days without your company had passed quicker, the sooner to find you well again, but alas Time in your absence was so desolate that he could hardly skip merrily, but indeed dragged his feet in heavy sorrow. I trust your week went well, and am much overjoyed of your return.

ANYWAY. Lots of gayness. I spent a good portion of my junior high school, then high school years in love with Charlie. Nuwanda. TO INDEED BE A GOD. Etc, etc. Still know half that movie by heart. If I wasn't watching Lear I think I'd have to put it on now.
