Pick a character I write, and I will give you the top five ideas/concepts/other I keep in mind while writing that character that I believe are essential to depicting them accurately. This includes both original characters, characters I RP and characters about whom I write fanfic.

Date: 2011-01-12 10:03 pm (UTC)2 - Lack of Self-Confidence. Which partly derives from #1, actually. His inability to put much of anything that matters into words makes him feel like an idiot. That and the fact that he is, in fact, an idiot. For all the love I bear him, he's not the sharpest tool in the box.
3 - Defensiveness. Due to #2, obviously. The prickly exterior bit and the very profusive fonging threats.
4 - Love of Life. His love of food, and of sleep, that's what it's about. He could never put it into words for you, but it is. And the loyalty to his friends? Comes from that, too.
5 - Practicality. His logic is not everyone's logic, but he will always follow it and try and make things make sense in a very practical kind of way. (Bonus in AKT!verse when you add religion on top of that and... oh, his logic, I love it.)
(I do not have an AKT icon whaaaaat? Here, have oral sex instead.)

Date: 2011-01-12 10:33 pm (UTC)1 - Darling. It might sound stupid, but the only reason Stuart exists is because of James Callis's "The Wolf" character in Sex, Chips and Rock'n'roll, and the Wolf's many "darling"s stuck around. They're a big part of what kind of Englishman Stuart is.
2 - Addict. Stuart is not a healthy person at all. He smokes, he drinks, he occasionally does drugs, sure. But mostly it's his addiction to art that is most troubling. It takes him over for hours at a time and makes the outside world fade away. Art matters more to him than anything else.
3 - Wilde. In case it wasn't strikingly obvious already, he is a fan of Wildeisms. It is one of his most refined defense mechanisms.
4 - Privacy. After a year spent in Boulder, and all the relationships he has formed, he has still not told anyone about His One Relationship. This is how much he conceals himself.
5 - Hedonism. I think that one speaks for itself.
I kind of want to do 6 and 7 on domination and masochism, but oh well.

Date: 2011-01-12 10:20 pm (UTC)2 - Walls. She has them. She won't let you past them in a hurry. The fun exterior is actually also a barrier.
3 - Belief. She was raised by Nightcrawler and the X-Men. She became an X-man when she was 17. Her sense of right and wrong is strong, and she'll do what it takes; that is her religion. (Sorry, Kurt. Sorry, Wanda.)
4 - Her Type. She tends to be into strong people (both physically and mentally) who nonetheless have self esteem issues, but can oh so well take care of themselves. There needs to be a back-and-forth exchange - they can lean on her, and she can lean on them.
5 - Up In Your Face. As in, she will be if you start telling her what she can and can't do, or are going after one of her friends, or or or. She's not afraid to speak up.

Date: 2011-01-12 10:45 pm (UTC)1 - Battle Computer. It has to be the first thing, for everything it entails. Anyone makes the slightest move, Mid already knows of a thousand ways to kill them/stop them in case that move becomes a risk to him or someone else around. That means crankiness. And that means not letting others close.
2 - Love. Complete and Utter Love. That means that when he does let someone in, he does so completely. And the winner is, obviously, Apollo. He damn near worships the man, whenever he isn't insulting him. And he's got no walls up with him. Not one.
3 - Family. He'll do anything for Jenny and Apollo. And then, on a lesser degree, for the rest of the Authority. (Not Jeroen.)
4 - A Finer World. Anything except endanger the world, go against their mission of making a finer world. Bendix might have betrayed them but it is still what he is all about.
5 - Not A Human Being. They call themselves post human, but he thinks he's not even human anymore. He can't feel heat or cold (unless the heat is Apollo's), he can't feel pain, and he is such a mess that he does not think himself worthy of being called humans. Half the time he'll insult regular humans, but he's dedicated his life to making them safe. He envies them, while knowing he can never be one of them. They tried once.
WHY ONLY FIVE.

Date: 2011-01-13 12:56 am (UTC)2 - Karedan. Niko is an assassin priest, even if he is not in Striv society anymore. Simply because he no longer practices it does not mean that it has stopped informing who he is. He is learning what it means in Gotham in terms of his duty. This is, of course, only in GYO terms, and when writing him in his universe, it is just as important in much more obviou ways.
3 - Kiaredan bae: one without comparison. Niko was the only human to become this good a karedan. This means that a) he worked at it like the most stubborn man that ever stubborned. b) he embraced everything about the Striv culture entirely. This is his life.
4 - Okaara-na: the place of necessary release, as in the release of the mind enemy, klal'tloric. This is something Striv, and particularly karedane, do from time to time. They believe that to hold a grudge or be hung up about something hinders you on the path to hiarviirc-na bae, and must not be fought, but accepted, integrated, and eventually released. Incidentally, okaara-na is also a euphemism for sex, which is where I derive the whole way he views sex from.
5 - Warboy. Niko was the leader of the Striv fleet, and that has taught him a lot. To lead, to make sacrifices, to demand sacrifices out of others. To be made into the most hated human in EarthHub. To cause suffering to his loved ones.
I'm almost surprised that of these five things, one of them is not a Striv concept. Seriously, most everything about how I write Niko comes from the Ki'hade language, because Karin Lowachee is just that smart and she made up a language that says even more about a philosophy than the English explanations we got inside the books.

Date: 2011-01-13 05:34 pm (UTC)Man, Mel. I hadn't thought of her in ages. Meeep.
1 - Fun. Mel is the polar opposite of David. She likes to have fun and to draw people into having fun with her.
2 - Family. Family Matters. A lot. All the more so because of what happened to her birth parents.
3 - Friendship. She needs friendships in her life. She needs to have a support system and be part of a support system for others.
4 - Filanthropy. (Hush, I'm trying to keep the F thing going.) She does what she does because she wants to help people. If she had money she'd be giving it away and/or creating a Foundation or something.
5 - Fred. (Ha! I managed. Kinda cheating on this one, but hush.) Okay, so I didn't know she would suddenly insist on dating Fred, but she did, clearly. And he makes her super happy.
I wish I still had enough writing muses to keep going with this. I hate this sort of weird writer's block I've been in for a couple years, man. How've you been? *snugs*
