"Serenity Forever."

It was just the name of a con.

Now it's an affirmation, in more ways than just the one related to the movie/ship. I will remember this con forever.

I don't think I've ever come out of a con feeling quite this good about myself, and the world. Because our community rocks. Because we are such an awesome bunch of geeks Joss Whedon can show up to party with us and not be bothered or cause a riot. Because you can strike up a conversation with any other attendee and make new friends and it's all good. Because I spent over three days speaking nothing but English and good gods, I miss that. Because we're all just as fucking crazy and because we don't judge.

Apart from you, annoying person that spoiled the end of S2 of Continuum for me. You I judge a little because come on! You don't spoil like that! Basic geek rules!

I got some disappointing news while at the con, but there could have been no better environment to receive them. (It was nothing horrible, just disappointing.) And not just because "But Joss Whedon!" but also because of the people around me and the fact that you can't really emo with them around. There is too much fun to be had.

But I originally wanted to write my Joss story here, so I should probably get back to that.

From what Sean Harry (the organiser), Sean Maher and Jewel Staite told us at the closing ceremony, this is what happened. Sean, Jewel and her friend Jen were meeting with Joss for drinks. More specifically, tequila. So much tequila that they wanted to dance. And there was a party at the con.

Sean had a very clearly brilliant idea of putting Joss in a scarf so that they could sneak him into the hotel.

Sean Harry was outside smoking a cigar when they arrived. And that man adores his cigars. The attendees smoking outside knew something was up when they saw him throw away that cigar and run inside after that small group, full geekboy mode on. Sean Maher had destroyed his own cunning plan by mouthing 'This is Joss!' at him on their way in.

When Joss got to the main hall, we were shaking our asses on the dancefloor - I can't even remember to what. Carlos came running to us, super excited, telling us "Joss is at the bar!" Cue in our various reactions: "What?" "No way!" "Are you shitting us?" "If it's a joke, it's really not funny."

I personally thought that he meant the hotel bar by the lobby, but as we headed out of the main hall, we saw him at the bar inside it. There, right in front of our eyes, Joss Whedon. I was about four feet from him, and I couldn't help but blurt out, "I think I speak for everybody here when I say, 'Holy fucking shit!'" He'd turned to me, and he said, in a very Joss way, and totally randomly, "I like your outfit." (It was the steampunk night, so I was all decked out in a corset and layered skirt.)

I turned away to squee with the guys, then headed back towards him. There was a small circle of people around him, but nobody actually talking to him. Fred and I came at him from different directions, because great minds think alike, to talk to him again. I asked him how come we were getting Much Ado so late, and he explained that they'd had a lot of trouble selling it (again, wtf, France, I hate you).

Fred told him that now he could cross meeting him off his bucket list, and went on to thank him for changing his life, and allowing him to meet his best friends, his girlfriend, etc. I told him thank you for my career, because I wouldn't speak English the way I do if it weren't for Buffy, and he answered, "Oh, so you're speaking it wrong."

Finally, we shook hands with him and left him to do some more tequila shots and dance his ass off on the dancefloor. We moved aside, hugged each other and sort of crumpled to the floor to have a little cry.

He stuck around and danced danced danced (including a pretty impressive robot), with Sean and Jewel, until the hotel staff turned the lights back on, at which point he grabbed a mike and jumped onstage to improvise a quick Grinch speech, complete with Grinch voice: "I don't want you to have fun. 'Cause you're loud, and you dress weird, and we're boring. You should all go to your room and think about what you've done - with shame. But not the shame you feel when you have a weird sex dream. I wouldn't know anything about that. I'm asking for a friend."

He switched to his regular voice and started to thank us, at which point we all started to chant, "Whedon! Whedon! Whedon!" and he came back with, "Aaaand now it's getting creepy." He thanked us for the love and the support, and said it meant more than he should say in public. At one point, Elisa shouted, "We love you Joss!" He looked at her, then at the other side of the crowd, and told them, "They love me over there. What do you got?"

And that's all I've got. It was such an amazing experience. For Joss reasons, and for all other sorts of reasons. The guests were also great. I haven't seen SGU and didn't know Elyse Levesque, but check out her Vagine Rhyme video. That will give you an idea of exactly how awesome this weekend was.

I love geeks.

Serenity FOREVER, dudes.
