What are you gonna do with that, sailor?
Apr. 29th, 2004 11:32 pmJust a quick rant about Secret Window, which I've just watched. Good points or bad points first?
Alright, good points: Johnny, John, Maria. And I guess that's about it. Maria Bello is a breath of fresh air, quite beautiful too (starred in ER, if like me you're wondering where the frel you've seen her before). John Turturro is quite the freaky thing, and I love his accent. Wish I could do it, but I tried and... yeah, I can't. As for Johnny... Well, I'll talk about Johnny afterwards.
Bad points, or really, bad point singular: the story. Oh my god the story. Can you go with even less suspense? From the beginning of the movie I was like, it can't be that, it would be too obvious. So, either I read too much Stephen King when I was young, either that was really obvious. That greatly frustrated me. Especially since I think what might have worked well in the novella (haven't read that one, I'm afraid) did not work so well on screen, but I'm not gonna say more not to spoil anyone.
Now, back to Johnny. That particular plot gave us a pretty interesting scene by Johnny, but still. I felt it was... fettered. Or something. I liked Johnny much better in the first half of the movie, with his portrayal of this... guy, really. Not a Bruce-Willis-like anti-hero, but a true anti-hero, and someone so very real. Johnny can be Jack Sparrow and lend credibility to the personification of excentricity, and then he can be Mort Rainey and lend credibility to his complete regular Joe. It's all in the small things. And in the bed hair, too. Gotta love the bed hair.
All in all, not the best of movies. Not the worst, either. If you like Johnny, watch it. Otherwise... well, it's not too long. You don't have time to get bored, I'll say that for it. And John Turturro is amazing (aha! Johnny can't do as good an accent. He tried, but he can't.) in a creepy way.
"You stole my story." I don't even know how to describe that accent.
Anyway. Johnny rocks, that's for sure.
