So - Charlie/Dom is dubbed by the same guy that usually does Jensen Ackles and it's ridiculous and he's not even funny, all accents are non-existent (I wouldn't have expected Claire's or Charlie's to translate, but Sayid's would have been nice), most some of those dubbers cannot act (or at least cannot dub), Locke's dubber was probably cast from just the script of the pilote because he sounds all Indian Wise Man Cliché, and... the worst so far? Kate and Sawyer say "vous" to each other, which is a mark of respect or distance. *snorts* As if.

But it's not as bad a dubbing as Buffy or Firefly. Which isn't much of a compliment, but it's still something.

Also, another good thing. The oral acting is sometimes so poor that you (or, well, I) naturally pay much more attention to the silent acting. Their faces, their eyes, their body language... Foxy's never been that good! (Well, that's a lie because I think he's been that good and then some in later episodes. But you get my point.)

That said, they are of course leaving Jin and Sun undubbed. How will they do when she starts speaking English? It's bound to be one of those awful "I changes voices completely when I change languages" deals. Ew.

EDIT: ew indeed. At least the dubber pretends to have a bit of trouble with the language, albeit in a very unconvincing manner. She over-pronunciates things, but still there is no accent. *sigh*

And Kate is even more annoying in French. Or maybe I'm biased.

That said, I had a very interesting conversation with a friend of mine (Klem, for those of you who know him) about fate vs. chance. And now that i'm watching Lost, I realise that if the two of us were on the island? He'd be Locke, and I'd be Jack. Well, he's not into hunting and knives, and I'm not big with the heroics and the leadership, but... still. It's a scary thought.

*perks up* Oh, it's The House of the Rising Sun... and thus the flashback is in its original version! Guys! We've got V.O. on TF1!! Imagine someone who doesn't know about Lost just switching channels onto TF1... enough to give anyone a heart attack.

J'vais pas m'étendre ça me révolte trop ^^lol.
On vient d'entendre Sun parler français...mouahahaha...:)..mon dieu..

Heureusement que t'as précisé, je me demandais...

Let's see if my crap French holds up to do this...

(You're lucky to speak English well enough to enjoy it in non-dubbed format. Is it available in English now that you've returned home?)

Format non-dub= VO (for "version originale). You oppose it to VF, obviously version française.

It wasn't perfect French, but it was understandable. Congrats!

And now for the translation: even if you don't speak really good English, you can watch TV-shows in non-dubbed format - with subtitles, of course, but also without. My sister, for instance, watched Lost without subtitles. She didn't always understand everything, but it helped her get better!

Cable shows a few series and films in non-dubbed format, but the best to see non-dubbed stuff in France is DVDs (and living in Paris to have cinemas that show non-dubbed films). But if you don't wanna wait (sometimes a long while), your only solution is to download.

You're so patient with me :)

Interesting to see how y'all put things in French: "passer" for "showing" as in TV shows, and "télécharger" for "download". I learned me something today!

Trust me, you're so far from crap at French. I've taught young English kids. ;) And anyway, even if you were - as long as you're making the effort, I ought to be patient!

Yay! Learning is good.

I love your rants. And I would never have dared watching. Though the original version bit must have been worth it. :)

Of course I dare watch. I have to know what they're doing things like these days. I wanna know what the enemy thinks like what will be expected of me.

Seriously though, it's interesting in a masochistic sort of way. They're trying to make it sound colloquial, I find, which is a very good thing imho. Locke talking about himself "qui a plus de quarante balais" for instance. Or Malcolm going "pourquoi t'as dit que les coréens peuvent pas nous blairer?" or something like that. I say kudos for that. Apart from the Sawyer/Kate "vous" thing, I don't think the translators did too bad a job ('course, that might be 'cause I haven't watched these episodes in a while), even though some parts sounded dead corny... but chances are it was because it was Foxy's dubber saying them instead of Foxy.

The problem is the dubbing. Well, no, the main problem is the dubbing. You can tell apart, without the visuals, a French production from a French dubbing in a heartbeat. There is something very wrong with the way dubbers do it, or dubbers are directed, or... I don't know. But it just isn't working, not for me.

And then, of course, not always hearing the same voices would be good. As if Superman (Lois and Clark), Kyle (Early Edition), Chandler (Friends) and so many others actually were played by the same actor! Or Jensen Ackles and Dominic Monaghan were one and the same, again. I understand why they took that guy on - he's perfect for Jensen because he's perfect for witty, sarcastic comebacks. And Charlie is young and not bad on the eyes and he has funny lines - of course they'll take that guy.

But it doesn't work. It's not at all the right delivery for that kind of humour.

It did work for the verbal copulation line (I heart that line), but for every time you'd laugh in French, you'd have laughed about five times in English.

Ok, good thing you love my rants, because here I've come and done it again. ;)

I discovered the non-dubbed version this morning, and I've watched 21 episodes in French. So I won't say I love the VF, but I find it quite good. Of course you can't judge until you've seen episodes in English and I've watched only 2 eps, so I can't really judge either.

From what I've seen though, Kate has a terrible French voice, but I didn't notice it before, and it's the same for Jack. RRRrrr Fox's voice <3<3 I don't know but his French dubber seems too much of a good guy, really too much.

I've been used to Charlie's and Locke's voices in French because of Alias (that dear Mr Kendall ^^) and LotR I've watched in French most of the time. Maybe if I watched the show in English, I'd be pissed off by their voices.

On the other hand, I like Sawyer's voice both in French and in English. For different reasons. Maybe it's because the dubber is the one who dubs Julian McMahon.

Too bad they translated "Black Rock" at the beginning of the season, it's a little ridiculous when they found it and have to translate in English again.
"Voilà le rocher noir, le Black Rock"... Too bad.

I'm sure it's a loooot better in English but I'm not too unhappy I didn't download the season. I don't know if I'll do it for the second season though.

I can't remember what I thought of Sawyer's dubber - does he dub Julian McMahon in Charmed? 'Cause I can't remember if I ever watched Profiler in French, and I can't remember what little N/T dubbing I've watched. It's very sad that I can remember his dubber's voice only from Charmed, when I don't like the show and haven't watched it that much at all... It shows what I thought was interesting in the show. (Aka, Cole.)

I can't believe you watch LotR in French! It's awful, horrendous, absolutely unbearable! At least to the LotR geek that I am. It loses all of its charm. They can't pronounce any of the names right, Frodo has Pacey's voice (doesn't he?) and let me not get started on the accent. I never could watch it. You're losing so much Dom goodness in French, trust me. He just shouldn't be dubbed. Ever.

As for Foxy, he's just too good to be dubbed, but as I said I think the horrible dubbing brings out the quality of his physical interpretation. That man can break me with a look.

I haven't watched Alias in French in far too long to remember that it was the same voice, but I love Terry too much, once again. I stand by the VO.

Download S2!! You're not gonna wait for it to arrive in France, are you? I know I couldn't, dubbing reasons aside. I cannot wait. Have you finished the whole of S1? Because, boy, I need to know. I really do.

I should make myself a "dubbing sucks" icon, but I can't think of any concept for it. Hmm.

*sends love to Foxy, Josh and all the rest*

Relaaaax ! I've seen it in English too ! It's just that I've watched it with my bro and he's too young to read subtitles so French it is. And don't worry, I know it is awful ! (funny when it comes to Legolas though ^^) and I don't remember if it's Pacey's voice, but it wouldn't be a surprise. Pacey's voice was perfect for... uh Pacey ?

I love him too ^^

Yep, finished it already. It took me *counts* less than four days to watch the whole season. And yeah I want, er, need to know, I already have too much shows to download, and Lost is not the one I want the most. So I guess it will depend on Alias too. Maybe I'll wait for Alias to be aired on Teva, and I'll download Lost then.

Why does it depend on Alias?

And, well, the only thing I really want to know, like really badly, is how the guys are gonna make it back to the island. The whole hatch thing? I care not. JJ? Your devil's cliffhanger's tactics do not work on me! I am so uninterested in the hatch plot I would probably care more about it if it had never been mentioned! (Yes I know that sentence makes no sense! No I can't seem to stop using exclamation marks!)

Anyway. I'm getting worked up. I think I'm cranky today. Forgive me.

Well, if the first episodes of the season are good, I'll download Alias, but since I laughed at the finale, and I really can't stand some characters anymore, Lost could take Alias' place on the shows-to-dl list.

Did you see the little extract from season 2. I found it on LJ I think. I'll get the link if you haven't seen it yet. Or maybe you don't want to.

I hope she dies down there!!

(And right after she told Jack she was with him, too! You traitorous bitca!)
