I, ladies and gentlemen... have a job!
Okay, so it's not the bestest job ever. I'm working with Acadomia, for you French peeps to who it actually means something. I'm gonna be giving English lessons (and possibly a few French lessons to junior high students, too), for at best 10 to 15 hours a week, but it's better than nothing. I have an appointment on Tuesday so they can get a good idea of what kind of pupils to give me, and give me my first few missions. I don't rightly know how I feel about teaching again, but I shall do my best. Hopefully things will go well. It won't be much money, but it's money all the same.
Now for a change of subject, Narnia! Let me bask in James McAvoy love... and dammit, I really need to do a batch of icons soon, because I need a James icon among other things.
So, Narnia. First off, loved the score. Just that train journey through England at the beginning, with the soft song and music, and goosebumps broke out all over me. That music, dear gods.
Also, James! James was lovely as Mr. Tumnus, I thought he did an amazing job and his scenes with Lucy really worked. He just brought a very real quality to Mr. Tumnus, beyond him being an originally funny character (thinking mostly of that first scene, obviously, as he's less with the funny afterwards). He was just more than that. Big love to James. And the scene in the dungeons? I wanted to cuddle him and protect him from harm for ever and ever after.
Ray Winstone was excellent as Beaver (Dawn French wasn't half bad either, mind you), and dear gods Rupert. I could get married to that man's voice (which is likely the only part he'd let me marry, sadly). And his character was wonderful. The only one with any bit of cunning and ambiguity and oh how I love this man.
...eeep! How did I not recognise Michael Madsen as Maugrim? I did like the voice, but it completely didn't register that it was him!
Tilda Swinton was amazing as well, chilling, and I love the way she moved and fought. Hmm. Yes. Also, great phallic symbol moment before she killed Aslan.
Now, Aslan though. Yes, he's a "though." Because that wasn't Aslan, that was Liam Neeson. It just... didn't work, I found. It was always Liam Neeson, not a lion. And he does have quite a lot in common with Jesus, but anyway. Also, breathing on everybody's enough to bring them back? Cheap. And I wish some people had died. I love Oerius (is that what he was called? The centaur in charge guy.) and his sacrifice was lovely and I wish some sacrifices were actually that, sacrifices, and not "later, guys!" types of things. Everybody was saved! But I suppose that goes with the Christian thing. All the good people come back to life in heaven.
I was very glad to see some centaur bowwomen, because the girls were in pretty dresses and they didn't do very much. It was understandable for Lucy, but Susan and her bow were definitely underused. That was cheap. I love Lucy, though, and her character.
Also, re the ending - they've grown into adults in Narnia, and now they're back on Earth in child form. Shouldn't that make for some psychological uber-frustration? Of the Claudia-in-Interview-with-the-Vampire type? Adult minds in children's bodies? Wanting to have sex, for one thing (though granted I don't see who they'd want to have sex with in Narnia, as there are only magical creatures around probably not suitable for sex with humans... hey, oral sex can always be the way to go, I guess), but all the rest of it too - like being taken seriously, and having a say in things, I mean they were sovereigns!
Also, they were hunting? Isn't the ram or deer or whatever it was gonna be another friendly talking animal? Love Philip, by the way.
And I'm sure there are lots of other things I can't think of right now, but, yeah. I liked it, on the whole. It took me away and I felt during this film. But I still have a few things that bug me here and there, is all. Now I will put reading the Grail Cycle on hiatus while I read the Chronicles, and eventually I will watch the film again.
That said, the Dive from Clausen's Pier is a baaaaad movie. But Sean Maher is absolutely lovely and sex-worthy. And when he speaks French? Very cute.

Date: 2005-12-29 11:17 am (UTC)And you people really don't make me wanna watch the Dive [...], because as much as I love Sean, I'm not sure I can watch a whole movie just for him :)

Date: 2005-12-29 12:11 pm (UTC)Well, yeah, it's really not a good movie, but it's worth watching just for Sean and mostly, you wanna watch it with somebody so you can spend your time taking the piss out of the whole thing. ;)

Date: 2005-12-29 11:43 am (UTC)et je suis totalement d'accord pour The Dive... Pathétique est encore un mot trop faible... Mais Sean... Ah Sean... Et oui le français c'était trop chou (ok... Je dois *vraiment* arrêté le 'chou' à toutes les sauces...)

Date: 2005-12-29 12:41 pm (UTC)And anyway, whether or not I missed the Oreius thing, I *know* not everybody was saved. Many died during the battles. Only those who fought the Witch or who didn't get killed at once by the others but just wounded slightly enough to survive until Lucy's arrival (which might take hours for some of them) had a chance. That left plenty of people dead for good.
They just didn't show it or mentionned it.

Date: 2005-12-29 02:38 pm (UTC)Of course, logically not everybody was saved. I can still use logic, thankyouverymuch, even though my squeeful state suggests otherwise. But the movie was shot so that it didn't show, and that's my issue with it.

Date: 2005-12-29 03:29 pm (UTC)Probably because I didn't expect the same things from Pirates as I did from Narnia. Pirates I only ever viewed as a Disney movie, much as it is an amazing one (imho). Narnia... I expected more of a true epic out of it, I suppose. Instead of a fairy tale. And that is likely why the movie didn't completely sit right with me. Hmm.

Heh. Shafted. *g*
Yeah, a lot of those peeves are just plain Lewis -- like the breathing on the statues to revive them. That was Lewis. And the animal they were hunting at the end was the White Stag (some creature half-mythical, half-immortal, or something...can't remember precisely).
Shouldn't that make for some psychological uber-frustration?
Those are exactly the sorts of things a lot of people object to about Lewis.
